Every winter I turn into a recluse and disappear, trying to break that habit. Today was unseasonably warm out of the blue and I got some stuff crossed of the list of growing projects I got going on.
Winter might seem bleak for gardeners, but it’s actually the perfect time to prepare your cannabis ( or otherwise, I grow lots of things) garden for the growing season ahead. Here’s how you can use a nice winter day to get your garden in top shape for spring planting.
1. Inspect and Clean Your Tools
Before the season kicks off, take the time to clean, sharpen, and oil your gardening tools. Clean off any soil or plant residue, sharpen your pruners, and ensure everything is in good working order for when you start planting cannabis in the spring. If you got rusty tools like I often do, I love a product called Naval Jelly for real deal rust removal. With Hop Latent viriod so damn pervasive, we all should be using 10% bleach solution on our tools , but you all know that. That does lead to more rust, its your job to have clean working tools to you best work.
2. Prepare Your Soil
Healthy soil is the foundation of a great cannabis garden. Winter is a great time to test your soil for pH levels and nutrient content. Based on the results, you can plan amendments like compost or organic matter to enrich the soil before planting. I try to do this as early as possible so the organic material has a few months to start breaking down. I personally leave a a small amout of leaves down as weed prevention in the winter and the just rake them up to the compost pile in spring. Easy, No need for plastic weed fabric.
- Test soil: Test for pH and nutrients to plan for any necessary amendments.
3. Prune and Trim Existing Plants
If you’ve grown cannabis in the past, winter is a good time to prune and remove any dead or damaged branches from perennials or other plants in your garden. This helps maintain healthy growth and prepares your space for new plants.
4 Plan Your Garden Layout
Winter is the perfect time to plan your cannabis garden layout for the spring. Consider where you want to plant each strain, and make sure your space gets the right amount of sunlight. Also, start looking into what seeds or clones you want to grow and place orders ahead of time.
5. Mulch Garden Beds
If you’re using mulch, apply a layer over your cannabis garden beds to keep the soil insulated and suppress any potential weeds. It’ll also help retain moisture for the spring planting season.
6. Monitor Weather for Frost Protection
While cannabis is typically planted after the last frost, it’s smart to prepare frost covers for unexpected cold snaps. Keep row covers on hand or even upside-down buckets in a pinch to protect your young plants if an early frost threatens.
Even in winter, your cannabis garden can benefit from a little attention. By taking these simple steps now, you’ll set yourself up for a successful, bountiful spring harvest.
